Attending four diverse events – from forums to luncheons – gave me a unique perspective on the island's dynamic AI landscape. While Taiwan's semiconductor dominance is well-known, what truly struck me was the emphasis on the human factor in AI adoption. Here's a glimpse into my week of AI immersion and the key takeaways I gleaned: 1. IC Taiwan Grand Challenge: Fueling Innovation from Chip to Application This competition isn't just about hardware; it's about sparking innovation across the entire AI value chain. The energy was palpable as global talent converged, eager to leverage Taiwan's semiconductor expertise to develop cutting-edge AI solutions for industries ranging from smart mobility to MedTech. Andrea, T. J. Hsu, Director General of the Department of Academia and Industrial Collaboration, emphasized that the key to winning is connectivity with Taiwan's local industries and value creation through industrial upgrading. 2. GenAI Innovation Forum: Bridging the Gap Between Startups and Corporations The GenAI Innovation Forum, hosted by Taiwania Capital, buzzed with conversations about integrating Generative AI into Taiwan's manufacturing powerhouse. A key takeaway: the need to bridge the gap between nimble startups, brimming with fresh ideas, and established corporations, seeking agile solutions. Leaders like Roger Chen, Sr. Director at LITEON+, emphasized the crucial role of startups in driving GenAI adoption, particularly within manufacturing. 3. AI PC Industry Forum: "Welcoming the AI PC Era" Taiwan's PC industry is a united front, embracing the AI revolution. The AI PC Industry Forum, aptly titled "Welcoming the AI PC Era," showcased industry giants like Acer, ASUS, Google, Intel Corporation, LITEON Technology, Pegatron, QCT, and Qualcomm standing shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to usher in a new era of AI-powered computing. The focus extended beyond hardware, delving into crucial aspects of user experience, privacy, and security. 4. European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan Technology Committee Luncheon: "Understanding the EU's AI Act from a Taiwan Perspective" As co-chair of this luncheon, I was particularly engaged in discussions about the EU's AI Act and its implications for Taiwan. Ken-Ying Tseng, Partner at Lee and Li, Attorneys-at-Law, and Isabel Hou, Secretary General of the Taiwan AI Academy, engaging in a thoughtful discussion about the EU AI Act.  A pivotal question arose: what are the biggest challenges for corporations integrating AI? The answer, surprisingly, wasn't technological but human. It's about understanding user behavior, driving acceptance, and ensuring ethical development.     As an entrepreneur who has spent over a decade cultivating Taiwan's startup ecosystem, I occasionally faced doubts about whether this small island had the potential to make waves on the global stage. I still recall a pivotal conversation in 2011 with Mark Dempster, then a Partner at Sequoia Capital, who encouraged me to stay in Taiwan because he saw "untapped opportunity" in the market. His visionary advice proved prescient and I co-founded Yushan Ventures, Inc. which span out Mosaic Venture Lab in 2018. Today, I'm proud to share the story of Mosaic Venture Lab, co-founded with Ken Huang and Johnny Yu, and how we've successfully connected Taiwanese innovations with major European automotive brands over the years. It hasn't always been easy, but the challenges only strengthened our commitment. From celebrating our first big success story in 2015 when we introduced Gogoro and battery startup Prologium Technology 輝能科技 to AUDI AG's Volker Kaese to broadening into sectors like smart mobility and clean energy, we've made tremendous progress. Our collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (Taiwan) and events like Startup Weekend also ignited enthusiasm for startups within Taiwan itself.  And now, the global chip shortage has shined an international spotlight on Taiwan's formidable tech capabilities. As Mark foresaw, interest from foreign companies is scaling exponentially. Yet our work is far from done. We remain dedicated to showcasing Taiwan's startup potential globally and helping ambitious founders scale up to meet international demands. Co-founded as Yushan Ventures in 2011 by Volker Heistermann, a German-American entrepreneur with a vision, Mosaic Venture Lab has become a catalyst for transformative partnerships between Taiwanese startups and European automotive giants. Our journey, chronicled over a decade, reflects a narrative of strategic growth, persistent innovation, and the forging of pivotal alliances. It's a testament to the resilience, creativity, and global potential of Taiwan's tech ecosystem. We've meticulously navigated through three distinct phases: from laying down our foundational relationships and celebrating our first major successes such as the introduction of Taiwan-based startup Prologium Technology 輝能科技 & Gogoro to Audi, bringing Startup Weekend to Taiwan, and working with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (Taiwan) (SMEA) chia-hsien(Robert) Yang Maggie HSU to promote Taiwanese startups - but global interest in Taiwan was still low at the time - to broadening our horizons into smart mobility and clean energy sectors. Our achievements speak volumes. We've been instrumental in helping startups raise over $100 million in funding, facilitating game-changing partnerships with industry leaders like Audi, BMW, Continental, and Volkswagen, and organizing events that champion innovation in the automotive sector. Yet, our path was not without its challenges. From overcoming the initial lack of awareness among European companies about Taiwan's startup ecosystem to bridging the cultural differences between Taiwan and Europe, and standing strong against global competition, we've faced them all head-on. Looking ahead, we remain optimistic. The challenges we've faced have only made us stronger and more committed to our mission. We're dedicated to showcasing the exceptional capabilities of Taiwanese startups to European companies and ensuring their success on the global stage.     **Empowering Women in Tech: A Weekend of Unprecedented Innovation with Audi Taiwan** Last night, the stage was set. Rahil Ansari 安薩瑞, CEO of Audi Taiwan, Ajay Parulekar and Brian Wu kicked off an electrifying 2.5-day Audi Innovation Award 2023 hackathon. Rahil's message was clear: "Innovation doesn't have boundaries or genders." And innovation took center stage, led by 15 all-women teams, each one committed to pushing the envelope in automotive digitalization. The room was a hive of activity from the get-go. Teams were diving deep into data, scribbling on whiteboards, and brainstorming innovative solutions for predictive analytics, digital paperwork, and customer sentiment analysis. The atmosphere was more than just electric; it was transformational. Every team was in it to win it, tinkering with UI wireframes and setting up data pipelines. 📈 But it wasn't just about lines of code. Data became the unsung hero of the event. Teams sifted through anonymous Audi data, each data point providing a breadcrumb trail towards solutions that could redefine customer experience and operational efficiency. Imagine a future where your car understands your needs before you do, or where buying a car is as easy as buying a cup of coffee—this future is being coded here, line by line. ✨ Then came the 'Eureka' moments—those breakthroughs that make burning the midnight oil worth it. Teams were cracking complex algorithms and high-fiving each other as they crossed milestones.     As a German-American at Mosaic Venture Lab here in Taiwan, I read this The Economist article https://lnkd.in/gZJntMcv on Germany's auto future with great interest. Taiwan plays a key role as an auto supply hub, including for my firm which scouts mobility startups.  Germany's automakers do not operate in isolation - they are tightly linked to a complex web of suppliers across Europe and Asia. Here in Taiwan, we are home to many crucial components manufacturers that feed into German auto production. In fact, Foxconn just announced it is taking a stake in German supplier ZF Group's chassis division to bolster its EV ambitions. This exemplifies the global interdependencies as the industry transforms. Germany's automakers are tightly integrated with supply chains across Europe and Asia. A decline in Germany would have ripple effects on component makers internationally, including many crucial firms here in Taiwan. Furthermore, the rise of EVs is shifting advantages as combustion engine expertise becomes less relevant. While Germany could lose ground to Tesla and China's EV leaders, Taiwan is positioning itself as a new EV supply base given our strengths in semiconductors, electronics and precision machinery. So Germany reinvigorating its auto sector requires an outlook beyond its borders. It must see itself as part of a new global EV industrial network where partners like Taiwan can collaborate on innovation.
